He was predeceased by : his parents, Gus Henry and Esther King Hughes; and his siblings, Henry Glen Hughes, Ann Drinkard Thompson, Byron Hughes, Larry Hughes and Kenneth "Kip" Hughes.

He is survived by : his wife Sue Pouncey Hughes; his daughters, Melissa (Reggie Rachals) and Michelle (Kevin Ward); his granddaughters, Danielle Rudd (Michael), Daphne Lindsey (Ben), Emily Jackson (David) and Katie Holley (Derek); his great grandchildren, Hunter Rudd (Halley), Christal Rudd, Kalli Lindsey, Chaz Lindsey, Kingsley Jackson and Remington; and his siblings, Virginia Blackmon, Sue Eiland and Fox Hughes (Martha Jean). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Bethel Baptist Church.
