He was predeceased by: his parents, Talmadge Mathis and Allie Bea Hall Mathis; and his sister Shelby Jean Hatcher-Smith. He is survived by: his wife Ann Brown Mathis; his children, Chris Mathis (Jayne) and Tonja Sasser (Larry); his grandsons, Matthew Sasser (Jessica) and Dylan Blackmon; his great grandchildren, Lydia Ann and Cole Sasser; his stepgranddaughter Elizabeth Horn; his siblings, Shirley Hatcher, Verdell Deal, Edna Andrews (Ed), Larry Mathis (Myra), Jerry Mathis, Tillman Mathis (Carolyn), Ronnie Mathis (Carol), Deborah Mathis, Elaine Blue (Bill) and Kathy Kelley; Nichole and Andrew Maughan. He is also survived by 28 nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Monday, November 3rd 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Bethel Baptist Church (3257 E Cottonwood Rd, Dothan, AL 36301).
