He was predeceased by: his parents, James Bruford Mitchell Sr. and Clara Mitchell Pitts (Campbell); his brothers, Vernon Mitchell and James Bruford Mitchell Jr.; his stepdaughter Kia Saunders; and his nephew Jermaine Bruford Mitchell.

He is survived by: his wife Diana Adams of Pittsburgh, PA; his daughter Elder Frieda Jolena Harris of Pittsburgh, PA; his stepchildren, Korey Mitchell of Pittsburgh, PA, Thompson Mitchell Jr. of Utah, Cassandra Clemons, Keita Lee of Pittsburgh, PA and Yolanda Saunders Pettway (Anthony); his siblings, Min, Brenda Reaser and Clara Jones (Warrick) of Austin, Texas; his sisters-in-law, Rose Smilely, Margaret Smith, Yvonne Grimmett, Lelia Mitchell and Charlene; and also Lorenza Mitchell (Lavondia) of Montevallo, AL.. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.
