He is survived by: his wife Linda of Montgomery, AL; his children, Steve Stephens (Meggan), Travis Stephens (Christy) of Pelham, AL, Wesley Stephens (Misty) of Helena, AL, Laura Bowers (Chad) of Pelham, AL and Lindsey Andrews (Adam) of Silverthorne, CO.; his sister Elaine Stephenson (Bobby) of Montgomery, AL; and his grandchildren, Ashley Underwood (Tyler), Travis Stephens, Joshua Stephens, Tya McCombs (Will), Bailey Stephens, Molly Johnson (Cooper), Noah Stephens, Tyler Stephens, Bella Stephens and Baker Stephens. He is also survived by great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in James' memory to the Folds of Honor Foundation, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, or the American Diabetes Association.
