He was predeceased by: his parents, Lester Smilie and Wilmer May Smilie; and his great grandchild Amelia Claire Kottyan. He is survived by: his wife Mary Emma Sellers Smilie; his children, Lynn Smilie Nesbitt, Lucinda Smilie Chappelle (Lewis Calvin "Chip") and Mary Loyd Bush; his grandchildren, Leah Nesbitt Kottyan (Kameron Mogadam) and David Gilbert Nesbitt (Katie); his great grandchildren, Isabelle Claire Kottyan, Ian Michael Kottyan, Mary Emma Nesbitt and Elizabeth Katherine "Elsie" Nesbitt; and his brother-in-law Gilbert Sellers, Jr. (Ethel).
