He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul A. Tanaka and Isabell H. Tanaka; his brother Peter O. Tanaka; and his brother-in-law Ken Cross. He is survived by: his wife Donna Simmons Tanaka; his children, Paul Kenneth Tanaka Jr. (Brittney), Matthew Daniel Tanaka, Michael Riley Tanaka (Madison) and Jasen Richard Craik; his sisters, Judith Tanaka and Joyce Cross; his grandchildren, Monroe Tanaka, Sebastian Tanaka, Noelle Tanaka and Crews Tanaka; his niece Kim Cross (Eddie); his great-nephew Austin; his stepdaughters, Lindsay Wishum, Robyn Lott (Justin) and Kari Hibbert (Jonathan); and his stepgrandchildren, Isabella, London, Finley, Mayson, Ezra, Jack and Scarlett.

In lieu of remembrances donations can be made in Dr. Tanaka's name to the Montgomery Humane Society.
