He is survived by: his wife Bonnie Bates; his children, Jackie Bates (Wanda) and Shannon Bates Murray (Thomas); his grandchildren, Lee Bates, Aundrea Weeks, Tommy Murray and Jacob Murray; his close friend Kevin Wade; and his pet Addie. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
