He was loved and cherished by many people including: parents: Helen Dawanda and James William Bess, Jr.; wife: Jan Self Bess; children: Jim Bess IV (Lisa), Julie Hagaman (John), and the late Michael; daughter-in-law: Melanie Bess; grandchildren: Will Bess, Michael Bess, Jr., Samuel Bess, and Rylan Vick; sister: Sue Hunt (Robert Hunt); niece: Lynn Hunt Kosup; nephew: Dr. Steven R. Hunt; brother-in-law: Dr. Robert S. Hunt.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 18th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Lester Memorial Methodist Church (100 3rd Ave E, Oneonta, AL 35121). A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 18th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the same location.
