He was predeceased by: his parents, John Newton Whitener and Ethel Emily Underwood Whitener; his wives, Anne Omera Whitener and Juanita Tidwell Whitener; his daughter Coleen Robinette; and his brother William "Bill" Whitener.
He is survived by: his children, Jennifer J. Blue (Rick) and John Whitener, III; his brother James Whitener; his grandchildren, Abigail Brock (Charlie), Jason Burgess and Beth Kirkland; his great grandchildren, Hayden Dugger (John) and Hannah Burns; his great great grandchildren, Avery Dugger and Evelyn Burns; and also Ed Peters.
