We announce the death of Irene Toole (Birmingham, Alabama), born in Talladega, Alabama, who passed away on September 15, 2026, at the age of 87. Irene will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. She was predeceased by: her husband Patrick Toole; her parents, Frank Gortney and Ethel Gortney; and her siblings, Willie Gortney, Myrtle Mashburn, Henry Gortney, Albert Gortney and Norman Gortney.
She is survived by: her siblings, Gladys Morton and Bobby Gortney; her children, Doug Griffin (Kris), Deniase Farmer (Don) and Midge Atkinson (Tink); and her grandchildren, Brandon Griffin, Heath Farmer, Derrick Griffin, Melicia Rogers, Mandi Gilliland and Craig Atkinson. She is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends.
Visitation was held on Thursday, September 17th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home (1591 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235). A funeral service was held on Friday, September 18th 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Jefferson Memorial. A burial was held on Friday, September 18th 2026 at the Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery (9013 US-11, Springville, AL 35146).
