He was predeceased by: his parents, John Thomas and Lucille Peoples Bates; his wife Barbara Rogers Bates; his daughters, Stacy Brown and Brenda Jenkins; and his siblings, Dixon Bates, Sue Barber, Thomas Bates, Jerry Bates and Loisann Stedham.
He is survived by: his son Neal Bates of Wadley; his grandchildren, Scotty Lee Brown, Joshua Shane Brown, Stephen Jenkins and Audriana Hunter; his great grandchildren, Wyatt Hunter, Judah Hunter and Joshua Elijah Brown; and his siblings, John Bates and Kathy Gilmer.
