She was predeceased by: her parents, Wiley Mitchell and Ellen Odessa Elliott Gay; her husband Durell Sweatt; and her siblings, Catherine Kilgore, Elliott Gay and Hubert Gay.
She is survived by: her children, Denise Hilburn (Charles) of Centre, AL and Tony Sweatt (Ginga) of Wadley; her brother John Robert Gay of Augusta, GA; and her close friend Larry Estes. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation was held on Sunday, January 11th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Benefield Funeral Home (17624 US-431, Wedowee, AL 36278). A graveside service was held on Sunday, January 11th 2026 at 12:30 PM at the Pine Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like any donations to be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
