He was predeceased by: his parents, Clyde Thornton and Violet Thornton; his brother Rocky Thornton; his brother-in-law Don H. Gray, Jr.; and his nephew Keith Sanders.

He is survived by: his wife Janet Thornton; his children, Michael Travis Thornton (Stephanie), Anita Tillery Davis, James Matthew Tillery (Deena), Heather Thornton Roberts, Holli Thornton and Michael Shane Thornton; his siblings, Linda T. Sanders (Larry), Ronald C. Thornton (Sherry) and Pamela T. Wilson (David); and his parent-in-law Dorothy. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren.
