He was predeceased by: his mother Amalia Garza Vela. He is survived by: his father Adan Vela; his son Richard; his wife Maria Luz Vela; his sons, Ricky Vela (Veronica) of Austin, Texas, Edward Vela of Altus, Arkansas, David Vela (Gail) and Danny Vela (Lori) of Hollis, Maine.; his grandchildren, Robert Vela (Dawn), Amiee Hebert (Brent), Colton Vela, Kilee Vela and Nikki Raybon; his great grandchildren, Taylor Vela, Victoria Vela, Ashley Vela, Austin Vela, Rylee Vela and Jaxen Vela; and his great great grandchildren, Sara Vela, Hayden Vela, Jocelyn Vela and Timothy Vela.
