He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Shepard and Mary Shepard; his wife Martha Shepard; his daughter Debbie Fleming; and his siblings, Herman, Kenneth, Donna and David.

He is survived by: his sons, Steve Shepard (Amy) of Bryant and Kim Ramsey (Paul) of Benton; his son-in-law Randy Fleming of Benton; his brother-in-law David Terry; his grandchildren, T. J. Fleming of Benton, Bailey Ramsey of Benton, Katlyn Shepard of Bryant, Aaron Ramsey of Benton, Emily Shepard of Bryant and Lexi Shepard of Bryant; his great grandchild Laikyn Fleming; his nephew Ron Shepard; and his niece Rita Shepherd of Bauxite.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Saline Missionary Baptist Church to the building fund in memory of James Shepard.
