She was predeceased by: her husband Jerry Cook; her son Jerome Cook; her mother Helen Cannon Steward; her stepfather Percy Steward; her father Richard; and her stepmother Eula Powell.

She is survived by: her daughter Tanya Cook; her siblings, Richard Powell Jr. (Celestine), Justin Powell (Vanessa), Jeana Finley and Tiffany Powell; her grandchildren, Breyauna, Arneisa, Jalen, Keiera, Jamaza and LaJavian; her aunt Melba Powell Lawrence; and her uncle Celet Powell. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, her precious.

Viewing will be held on Saturday, October 11th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Sims Mortuary (432 W Liberty St, El Dorado, AR 71730). A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 12th 2025 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at the Victory Church (Nw) (1432 N West Ave, El Dorado, AR 71730).

“Mama Val was a woman after the Most Highs heart. Unfortunately I never got a chance to say goodbye but I will never forget the impact she made on me for the 13 years I knew her as my spiritual mother. she had a heart full of love in spite of everything she went through. I introduced her to some sisters last year virtually and they told me they could feel her joy and love through the screen. I will never forget our many cries, trips, meals, and talks we had together. She will be missed greatly!!”
