He was predeceased by: his parents, Roger Armstrong of Oregon and Kathy Armstrong of Pennsylvania. He is survived by: his sons, Alex Armstrong and Jacob Armstrong; his brother Thomas Armstrong (Lindsay) of Pleasant Hill, California; and his former wife Ellen Armstrong of Macomb.

He was inducted into the U.S. Space Foundation Technology Hall of Fame for the commercialization of IC 531.
