He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Bates and Elvona Bates (Lyon); his son Jeffrey D Bates; and his sister Ann Burris. He is survived by: his wife Kay Bates; his children, Scott Bates, Andrew Bates (Jennifer) and Amanda McElhannon (Matthew); his grandchildren, Morgan, Kylee, Aubrey, Tristan, Avery and Jeffrey; and his nieces, Kathy Burl and Becky Harrington.
