He was predeceased by: his parents, Coy Fortson and Beulah Douglas Fortson; his former wife Jewel Dean Fortson; his granddaughter Sarah Hillman; his brother Edward Fortson; and his daughter-in-law Shari Fortson.

He is survived by: his wife Christene Fortson; his children, Leon (Janice), James, Johnny (Shanda) and Virginia Young (Larry); his grandchildren, Chris, Candice, Daniel (Poodoo), Jamie, Philip, Doug, Justin and Kerri; and his stepchildren, Priscilla Barnes (Manuel), Charlotte Fredeen (Doug) and Eddie Horton (Tammy).
