She was predeceased by: her parents, James W. Grissom and Mittie Huddleston Grissom; her husband Sanford Essmon Akins; her children, Virginia Dzurian, Michael Akins, Sandford "Sandy" Akins and Eddie Akins; and her grandson Michael Blount.
She is survived by: her daughters, Brenda Crossfield (Ron) of Dixon, Vickie Gilmer (Scott) of Jonesboro, Tina Yoshida (Johnny) of Portia and Dawn Jones of Jonesboro; and her sister Nadine Burgess of Arnold, Missouri. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
