He was predeceased by: his parent Beadie Shields; his wife Norma Jean Shields; his mother Esther Beulah Shields; his siblings, Gerald, Bill Shields, Mary Doyle and Merle Price; and his grandson Andrew Harden.

He is survived by: his children, Mindy Schwarz (Steve) of Jonesboro, John Shields (Brenda) of Hardy, Jennifer Baltz (Chris) of Newton, NC and April Maddox (Brian) of Jonesboro; his grandchildren, Ashley Hill (Brian), John W. Shields (Brandy), Lindsay Self (Taylor), Matthew Harden, Zachary Baltz, Molly Maddox and Fowler Maddox; and his great grandchildren, Nate Hill, Joy Shields, Katie Shields, Melody Hill, Bella Shields, Evelyn Harden and Elizabeth Harden. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
