He was predeceased by: his parents, Harvey Holmes and Alpha Hilton Holmes; his wives, Mouhee Varnell and Mary; his grandson Charles Lawrence Carpenter; and his siblings, Hilton Holmes, Nancy Taylor and Bonna Lea Edwards.

He is survived by: his children, Gail Carpenter (Drew), Rickey Holmes (Linda) of Judsonia and Greg Holmes (Wanda) of Judsonia; his grandchildren, Stacy Gordon (Darren), Eric Holmes (Katie) and Laura Johnston (Clayton); his great grandchildren, Weston, Braxton, Emery Gordon, Ethan, Logan Holmes, Jack and Claire Johnston; and his sister Pat Holmes Vaughn of Virginia.
