He was predeceased by: his parents, Minor James Cates and Clara Belle Cates Zwahlen; his stepfather Clifford Cates; his wife Tommie Joyce Cates; and his siblings, George "Bud" Cates, Jean Atkinson, Margaret Wood and Clara Faulkner.
He is survived by: his sons, James Cates (Leslie) and Joel Cates (Rhonda); his grandchildren, Breanna Cates White (Abe), Kristen Cates Davis (Steven), Brandi White (Josh), Joe Neel and Rand Sinclair; his great grandchildren, Connor Braswell, Allie Grace Davis, Beau Davis, Coleigh White, Jacob Neel, Brooklynn Neel, Dalton White, Joseph Vernon Neel and Rodney James White; and his sister-in-law Nancy Cates. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
