He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Bennett and Dorothy E. Barr. He is survived by: his wife Suzann Welty Barr; his nieces, Kathleen Wood (Nick) of Studio City, CA and Dr. Carrie Wood-Nobrega (Edward) of Paxton, MA; and his nephew Brian R. Wood (Jayne) of Leawood, KS.

Also, until Covid struck the country, he enjoyed weekly visits to nursing homes, swapping stories and talking to interesting elders.

John enjoyed serving in the St. Mark's Bread Brigade, delivering food donations to St. Francis House each Sunday morning.

“John was a Shipmate and a Brother in the large close-knit family of United States Navy Submarine Veterans. We served together in 1964 onboard the USS CORPORAL (SS-346) in New London, Connecticut. While our contact over the years was limited, I was aware and appreciated the effort John spent in keeping the Submarine Service heritage alive in Little Rock.
