He was predeceased by: his parents, Eunice J. Merkel and Walter J. Merkel; his wife Faye Merkel; his sister Gwen; his brother-in-law T. C. Smith; and his son-in-law Carl J. Chapman.
He is survived by: his children, James E. Merkel (Debbie), Bobby Merkel (Theresa) and Jeana Chapman; his grandson Jay Merkel (Labray); and his great grandchildren, Rainey and Rynn Merkel.
