Laurence Gregg Murphy Obituary
"Grief is the price we pay for love."
Laurence Gregg Murphy, better known as "Murph," passed away on March 20th, 2021. He was born on March 22, 1954 to Catharine & Peter Murphy, in Springfield, Illinois, the first born child of 4 siblings.
"Murph" spent many years as a Police Officer in Tempe, AZ , and later went on to become a Detective for Fort McDowell. During his career he started the East Tempe Rental Association in 1990-1991 and reduced crime by 66% (according to the statistics department). This later morphed into the Crime Free Housing Program, city and nationwide. He was very proud of this, and most of his accomplishments during and after his career.
He was very passionate about helping children, which he demonstrated by starting a reading program at an elementary school in Tempe. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his closest friends & neighbors, working out, riding his horse Dollar, traveling on his motorcycle, golfing and hiking national parks. Most recently, he even had a special seat & halter so that Audie, his beloved Australian Shepherd, could ride along. Murphy had a fantastic memory and was a terrific storyteller able to make his real life law enforcement experiences come to life.
Murph was survived by his only child, son, David ; daughter in law; Jess ; grandchildren, Maddox & Sawyer ; and siblings, brother Peter ; sisters Laurie, Cathy and Susie. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A service is being planned and will be updated when there are details available. Please contact son David Murphy, 727-810-0055 for more information.
