Joan Grier wrote a sympathy message

“I was honored that Sonny called me shortly before he died. I will always remember that call. We chatted about my respect for him as someone who always followed science and always had his head in a scientific journal. I tagged along to many a party and outing with Sonny and Bill Grier both in Phoenix and when he would visit the SF Bay Area. He was such a generous man, always looking for the best restaurant to take us to. He absolutely loved his family. We will miss you, Sonny!”
