“Peggy, I am very sad to read about the passing of Dan. Growing up, he was like a little brother to me even though we were neighbors. He spend hours with me asking endless questions as if he was a brother. We drifted apart over the past 40+ years with a chance to reconnect a few years ago via a phone call. Elson Shields”

Amelia Brande wrote a sympathy message

“Mr. Payne was my first introduction to music and the piano. I’m incredibly thankful for his kindness & patience when I hid my theory books or had to repeat a piece for a third time or when I didn’t want to perform in the choir. I was so incredibly sad to hear of his passing, but I will always remember his love for music and tender heart for his students—I don’t think I would enjoy music half as much if it weren’t for him. My deepest sympathy to his family, of whom he always spoke of with love.”
