He was predeceased by: his parents, Peter Birkel and Olivia Birkel; and his siblings, P. Michael Birkel and Zita Hook. He is survived by: his wife Kathy; his daughter Christi Schverak (Jeff); his grandchildren, Rebecca and Justin; his son Thomas Birkel; his grandson James T. Birkel; his daughter Kim Laird (Ben); his grandchildren, Isaiah, Micah and Savannah; and his brothers, Max Birkel and Bill Birkel.
