He was predeceased by: his siblings, Sherman L. Patterson Jr., Hazel Patterson Pegues and Traxler Patterson; his daughter Carmelita Patterson Garmon; and his grandson Simpson Grant.
He is survived by: his wife Marcy Patterson; his children, Russelle Patterson (Jack) of Petersburg, VA, Kim C. Patterson of Petersburg, VA and Joseph Patterson Jr. of Gilbert, AZ; his grandchildren, Madison Patterson, Trevor Lance, Vaughan Grant, Zechariah Grant, Alexis Jones (Joseph), Brittany Patterson and Opal Stuart (Marcus); and his sibling's children, Gail Patterson, Lois Pegus, Aaron Patterson, Allen Patterson, Seth Patterson and Gordon.
