He was predeceased by: his sister Dora Benavidez (Domingo); his stepfather Joel Ortiz; his mother-in-law Ellen Sheriff; his brothers-in-law, Richard, Ralph (Michelle), David Sheriff and Bob Sheriff; and his father-in-law Robert Sheriff.
He is survived by: his wife Lynn Sheriff-Mendez of Barstow; his children, Andy Mendez, Chris Mendez (Vanessa), Patrick Mendez and Katie Mendez (Savanah); his grandchildren, Caden Mendez, Mikayla Singkum-Mendez, Kendall Mendez, Claudia Mendez and Celeste Mendez; his great grandchild Emerie Kate Singkum-Mendez; his siblings, Jesse Mendez (Janus), Tom Mendez (Judy), Paula Miller (Kennith), Mary Mendez, Mele Mendibles and Connie Mendez (Mike Eagle); and his stepsiblings, Mirna Ortiz Carreon, Ricky Ortiz and Augie Ortiz. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
