He was loved and cherished by many people including: his siblings, Fred and Eileen Hignell; his wife Kaylinn; his father Fred Jr.; his children, Kim Young (Ken), Keri Oliva (Steve), Keli Schoon (Ric), Andrew and Ryan (Shea); and his siblings, Tom (Jeannie) of Oregon and Pennisue (Wendy) of Durham. He was also cherished by 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

“I loved doug who was a huge inspiration in my life all the years i knew him. I feel total respect for doug. When leaned he passed, i was heartbroken and shocked. I don't know if doug knew this but i thought of him very often and used his caring relationship with me to "guide" me in times of concern and trouble. That's how incredible he was for me. I'd try to be like doug who was a mentor to me, though i don't believe he knew that's how i felt about him. He is a bright light for me.”
