Herbert Jackson Haven Obituary
Herbert, a longtime resident of Citrus Heights, peacefully passed away in his home on November 28, 2022. He was 87 years old.
Herbert, often called “Jack” by friends and family, was born in Sacramento, California, and raised in Carmichael. Jack was the 4th child of Curtis Delmar Haven and Minnie (Cowan) Haven. He told many stories of his life growing up in Carmichael. The small home his father built as the family grew, the friends he met and still talked with more than 70 years later, and the dreaded newspaper delivery were some of the memories he spoke of often. Jack attended San Juan High School in Citrus Heights. After graduation, Herbert continued his education at California State University, Sacramento. He joined the California Air National Guard in 1958 and served six years while attending the university. Obtaining his bachelor’s degree in education was a great accomplishment. Herbert did his student teaching at the middle school level and was then hired at Folsom High school where he worked until he retired. He taught social studies at Folsom for 37 years and touched the lives of many of his students.
Some may call it fate; others would call it serendipity: Jack met his amazing Grace at the wedding of his brother Bill to his beautiful bride Marjorie. She was a friend of the bride and was cutting the wedding cake. He played it cool he said but admitted it was love at first sight. He married Grace in 1962. They had two children and planted roots in Citrus Heights. They were blessed with many supportive neighbors, like Joe and Vanessa Wagner.
Jack was a brother, an uncle, a poppa, a dad, and a teacher who inspired and laughed with many.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife Grace Louise (Jagger), brothers Delden Monroe Haven and Virgil Lee Haven, his sister, Gloria Faye (Haven) Gibson, sister-in-law Marilyn Joyce Haven and beautiful niece Jennifer Elaine Haven.
Herbert is survived by his brother William (Bill) Hendrix Haven, sister Claudia Jane (Haven) Garman, brother-in-law James Gibson, son Bryan Scott Haven, daughter Kimberly Kay (Haven) Zappe, son-in-law Marc Alan Zappe, grandchildren: Mackenzie Zappe, Gavin Zappe, Jamie (Haven) Scott, Jeffrey Haven, Jessica Haven, Corwynn Haven, great-grandchildren: Ethyl Mercury Scott, Rowan Kenobi Schroeder. Proud of his title “Uncle Jack”, he is survived by many loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, great-great nieces, and great-great nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Herbert’s name to Folsom High School General Scholarship.
