He was predeceased by: his parents, Manuel Steve Chavez and Hortense Chavez (Marquez); his wife Cleona Chavez; his children, Steven Chavez and Wanda Payton; and his stepson Rick Melchert.
He is survived by: his children, Ricky Chavez, Larry Chavez, Relynn Roper and Lori Norman; and his stepson Randy Melchert. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
