He was predeceased by: his parents, Horace Bushnell Butterfield and Susan Alexander Butterfield; his brother Charles Warren Butterfield; the mother of his children Charlotte Maguire Butterfield; and his children, Leslie Carter Butterfield and Captain Alexander Porter Butterfield Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Kim Butterfield of La Jolla, California; his daughters, Susan Butterfield Holcomb of Santa Cruz and Elisabeth Gordon Buchholz of Newport; his daughter-in-law Vanessa Butterfield of San Diego, California; his nieces, Rebecca and Carolyn; and his nephew Kent Butterfield. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
