He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Smith Sr. and Callie Windfield; his stepfather Samuel L. Watkins; and his siblings, Thomas Smith Jr., Alexander Smith, Norman Smith, Rose Ann Smith, Iola Allen, Alene Watkins and Christine S. Carpenter.
He is survived by: his wife Shu-Ying Yang Smith of Tainan, Taiwan.; his children, Nathan Earl Smith (Aurelia Dillard Smith), Mei-Carol McIntosh (Timothy McIntosh) and Michele Smith Bruce; and his grandchildren, Tobin Caleb Smith, Arden Joshua Smith, Rela Grace Bruce, Benjamin Baker Bruce, Chloe Lian McIntosh, Caellum Roan McIntosh and Selah Callie McIntosh. He is also survived by wife, children, grandchildren, extended family.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, October 26th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Hope Chapel (3625 Rucker Rd, Lompoc, CA 93436). The military honors will be held on Monday, October 26th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the Lompoc Cemetery (600 S C St, Lompoc, CA 93436).
While working for Lockheed Martin, Earl's dedication and contributions to the nation's manned spaceflight program earned him distinguished recognition.
