Robert Bayers wrote a sympathy message

“I am sad and very sorry to hear that Merrick has died. He had more courage than any person I know. We were classmates from 7th grade through 12th, in the French class at Smiley and East. I last saw him in Seattle, when I visited him at his condominium on 15th. In fact, I wanted to visit him this summer in Los Angeles . . . He helped me (and others) on Saturdays, when we wrote our essays on French Classical Drama for our teacher, Mme. Arnold. I would go to his house on Monaco and we would review.”
