“Dear Friends, I knew George from his time in the Marine Corps. He was our platoon commander when I was at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego in 1965. In all the years of my own professional like, I never met a man who was better at his chosen job. Mr. Herring - Staff Sergeant Herring - was respected and admired by all of us recruits and we considered ourselves lucky to have him as our Platoon Commander. I only recently learned of his passing and that news saddened me greatly. I had always hoped to get to San Diego and pay my respects to him, but that opportunity never materialized and I regret that loss of opportunity more than I can say. Please accept these tardy, but most sincere condolences for your loss. If I may offer any reminiscences that may be of comfort to you, please feel free to contact me. My home phone is 707-894-4448.
