Lefki (Kakousi) Yasser Obituary
Lefki Yasser – Feb 22, 1927 – May 23, 2021 (94 Years old)
Born Lefkosia “Lefki” Kakousi in Korifasio, Greece. Lefki led an amazing life through hard work, strong will, an adventurous spirit and an unbreakable faith. She is survived by her daughter Margaret Romiti, granddaughter Kristina Flynn (Sp. Rose Flynn), grandson Nicholas Hammer (Sp. Bridget Hammer) and 3 great grandchildren.
In 1935 after only one year of school Lefki went to work as a farmer at 8 years old. By the time she was 13 both of her parents had passed leaving her to raise and provide for her younger brother. For the next 7 years she worked every farm and crop in her small village to make a living. All this while also bravely surviving years of her village being occupied by the German military during WW2.
At 20 years old, Lefki left for mainstream Athens. Within a few years she taught herself English, invested in property, won a dance award and astonished with her style.
In the 1950’s Lefki’s ambition took her to Canada where she lived life to the fullest with several cousins and perfected her culinary skills. In 1962 Lefki’s dream of living in California became a reality. It was there that she met her husband George Yasser. Lefki raised her 2 children, 2 stepchildren and was extremely involved in the raising of her 2 grandchildren.
Lefki is well known for her cooking, dancing, hard work, volunteer work, commitment to the Greek Orthodox Church and her favorite miracle, her pet rooster, Babe. Lefki was a great storyteller and would often recite Greek nursery rhymes, poems and songs that would get a huge laugh. She loved to host big dinner parties and be surrounded by people. She made it into the newspaper several times for her fun antics/personality and dedication to her over the top Christmas decorations. She was an outgoing and fascinating woman that could make friends wherever she travelled. And she loved to travel!
After 50 years in Antioch, CA, and at 90 years old, Lefki moved to San Diego, CA to be with her granddaughters. They spent lots of time together dancing at Greek festivals, cooking Greek food and working at their church’s community garden. Their time together will be treasured forever.
As we find comfort knowing that Lefki is at peace in heaven, she leaves behind a legacy that will leave us all wishing for more time to be awe inspired. May Lefki’s memory be eternal.
