He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Catharine (VanderVeen) and James J. McKinney, Jr.; his wife Karen Lea McKinney (Bitler) of Reed City; his son Patrick Richard McKinney II (Jessica Russell); his grandchildren, Molly of Oakland, CA and Patrick III of Oakland, CA; his daughter Maura (Greg St); his stepdaughter Kristy (Dave Carey) of Cedar Springs; his stepgrandchildren, Nicholas Van Dyken of Seattle, WA, Dannielle Gill (Ryan) and Jake Garlick (Abbey) of Grand Rapids; his siblings, James J. McKinney III (Margaret) of Austin, TX and Carol Ober (Bob) of Marlboro, MD; and also, Henrik of Caledonia, Hudson of Caledonia and Hollis of Caledonia. He was also cherished by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the St. Philip-Neri Catholic Church, the National Alzheimer's Association, or to the MS run the US charity.
