He was predeceased by: his parents, Geert Atsma and Hinke Atsma (Hettinga). He is survived by: his significant other Aaltsje; his children, Hinke, Gerrit of Jong, Nathan (Brigit), Rimmert (Maegen), Luke, Paul (Elizabeth) and Stewart (Christine); and his siblings, Lieske, Hinke, Gerben and Ruurd. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.
