He was predeceased by: his father Ewan; his wife Genevieve; and his siblings, Janet and Alan. He is survived by: his children, Robert M. Gates (Dona Rae), Geraldine Gates Irvin (Brien), Karen Miller (Mark) and Roxanne Gates Daley (Sean).
