He was predeceased by: his parents, Paul Robert Karkiainen and Sarah Radina Peterson; his former wife Gayle Kirkwood Karkiainen; his stepparents, Don Howard and Josephine Karkiainen; his sister Cheryl Musson; his brother-in-law Steve Amala; his parents-in-law, An Kirkwood and Jack Kirkwood; and his brother-in-law Larry Kirkwood.

He is survived by: his brother Ronnie; his cousin Lois (Bobby); his wife Debbie; his son Dave Karkiainen; his daughter-in-law Christin; his granddaughter Kayli; his brother Dan Howard; his nephew Ian; his sister Susan Amala; his nieces and nephews, Erinn and Kevin Woodworth (Sarah); his brothers-in-law, Ron Hunt and Gary Kirkwood (Laura); his niece Abby; his uncle Ed; his aunt Bonnie Mattson; Faye (Debbie). He is also survived by cousins, and many, many friends.
