He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Thompkins and Matilda Thompkins; his wife Mildred Mills; and his son Anthony Thompkins. He is survived by: his children, Richard Thompkins II (Teri) of Colorado Springs, Lawrence Thompkins (Sherry) and Carroll Thompkins-Reeves (Anthony) of Felton Delaware; his grandchildren, Richard Thompkins III, Megan Thompkins, Alexander Thompkins, Evan Thompkins and Juan Powell; his siblings, Ezra Thompkins and Ida Lynch; and his sisters-in-law, Bernadette Howard and Wilameania Powell-Simpson. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
