Michael Donnelly wrote a sympathy message

“I only met Al a few times, since I joined the Barbos in 1980 and was there for almost 5 years, but Al was actively out of the picture, but for the occasional gathering of Steel Magnets etc and the pop in to some matches. He was a gentleman and apparently one of the real "few good men", yes, an officer and a gentleman, with the emphasis on gentleman. Brought back memories of old days, and was saddened to learn of his passing, but impressed by his final actions. Mike the "Fooge" Donnelly!”

Gay Guthrie wrote a sympathy message

“Al was a man who got my respect as soon as I met him and as years went by he also got my affection. He was honorable, smart and tough. Rugby put me in touch with many fine men, none better than him. Everyone will miss him.”

Clancy Hughes wrote a sympathy message

“Alan was one of those rare natural leaders, not just by military rank bur in every walk of life. In Rugby Al was an idle, a leader and a friend. I cry not just for his passing but for his final years with Parkinson's. Our condolences Lisa and prayers for your future. We will try and be there next year for that celebration. Love, Clancy & Diane Hughes”
