He was predeceased by: his parents, Lester Frederick Abbey and Faye Charlotte Abbey (Dunker); his wife Shirley Ann Abbey; his son Bruce; his parents-in-law, Ralph and Lola Staley; his siblings, Keith Abbey and LaVonne Maul (Walt); and his in-laws, Joe, Ruth Staley, Wanda, Phil Tintle, Nelda and Bud Bishop.

He is survived by: his daughter Polly Ann; his children-in-law, Mike and Brenda; his grandchildren, Rebecca, Alaina Abbey, Daniel Rockefeller and Ashley Gelroth (Will Gelroth); and his great grandchild Stevie Gelroth. He is also survived by extended family, lifelong friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Darrel's name to the Kiowa Fire Department or the Kiowa Senior Citizens.
