John Robert Schmidt Obituary
John Robert Schmidt, Sr., 76, passed away peacefully into the arms of the Lord at his home in Pueblo, Colorado on October 30, 2019. His son John Schmidt, Jr. who had been caring for him for the past year, was by his side.
He was born in Albany, NY on April 29, 1943 to Frank Schmidt Sr. and Mary Schmidt. He grew up on Ecker Hollow Road and attended and graduated from Middleburgh Central School. John, affectionately known as "Schmitty" excelled in all sports in high school and continued following sports until his death. He was able to watch to World Series games prior to his death. To his family, that meant that he died doing what he loved.
Following graduation John entered the United States Air Force, completed his Master's Degree in Engineering, and served as a Communication Electronics Engineer, retiring after 15 years of active duty. He married Lillian Bell in 1990 in Colorado Springs. She predeceased him in March 2000.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, John owned and operated Schmidt's Construction Company in Colorado Springs and was one of the first contractors in the state to build Earth Homes. He and his son worked together on construction projects in Colorado Springs, Walsenburg, and Pueblo.
He is survived by his son, John Schmidt, Jr., of Pueblo, Colorado; his daughter, Shawna Whatley of Griffin, GA; one granddaughter, two grandsons and his three dogs. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother Frank Schmidt Jr., his sisters Rose Frye and Mary Brampton as well as his parents.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Pikes Peak National Veteran' Cemetery in Colorado Springs with full military honors. Local assistance is being provided by the Langan Funeral Home of Schoharie.
