He was predeceased by: his parents, Helen Schmidt and Leonard Schmidt; his son Randy Schmidt; and his brother Alan Schmidt. He is survived by: his wife Gayle; his children, Leann Woodard (Tom), Darin Schmidt (Jackie) and Ryan Schmidt; his grandchildren, Miranda Sadar (Tyler), Ashley Woodard, Karsen Schmidt, Brody Schmidt, Ryan Whitmore and Paige Whitmore; and his siblings, Elva Unruh, Leona Totland, Norman Schmidt, Arlene Besore and Louella Ensz.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vernon's honor to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
