He was predeceased by: his parents, Fletcher Smith and Ruth Smith (Frantzen); his brother-in-law Ernest Merbler; his niece Melissa Iaconetti; his great grandchild Alexa; and his sons, Dennis and Donald Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Helen; his sister Barbara Merbler of Morristown, TN; his children, Michael Avens (Linda) of Manchester, Charlie Avens of Bolton, Dale Smith (Jack Moriarty) of Glastonbury and David Smith (Deborah) of Colchester; his grandchildren, Donald III, Michael Jr. (Becky), Kevin (Morgan), Jessica (Sean), Amanda (Giuseppe) and Ryan (Alexis); and his great grandchildren, Aspen, Elena, Hadley, Haley, Wyatt, Taylor, Sienna and Mason. He is also survived by numerous extended family members and friends.
