He was predeceased by : his parents, Francisco Rua and Isabel Fonte Nova Rua; his daughter Diana Moreno Rua; his brother Antonio Fonte Nova (Ileia Ila Fonte); and his brother-in-law Manuel of Cruz.

He is survived by : his wife Maria Odette Moreno Rua; his children, Duarte Rua (Amanda) and Silvia Rua Alfonso (Kevin); his grandchildren, David, Liliana, Jacob, Caleb, Ophelia, Peyton and Delilah; and his siblings, Domingos Rua (Fernanda), Mario G. Rua (Ana), Joao G. Rua (Ana), Ana Rua Rosa (Antonio), Arminda of Cruz, Ana F. Rua Henriques (Fernando) and Joaquina Rua Pereira (Jose Manuel). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
